Skim coating and finish levels matched to every room

Interior plastering begins with skim coating walls and thorough preparation before painting.
  • Level 1: Tape is embedded in compound for a rough, unsanded finish. Best for attics, crawlspaces, and hidden service areas.
  • Level 2: Tape is embedded and topped with a thin skim. Best for garages and areas to be tiled, like behind kitchen splashbacks.
  • Level 3: A two-coat fill process that leaves a minor surface texture. Best for walls being covered by heavy textures or thick wallpaper.
  • Level 4: A smooth three-coat process sanded for normal lighting conditions. Best for standard living spaces, bedrooms, and hallways.
  • Level 5: An ultra-thin skim coat over the entire surface to eliminate all shadows. Best for open-plan areas with critical tracking light or gloss paints.
Where existing walls are too far gone, re-GIBing is offered, alongside remedial work similar to exterior plastering projects.

Frequently asked questions for Interior Plastering

Level 4 is the standard finish suitable for most homes, where walls are viewed under normal lighting with textured paint or wallpaper. Level 5 involves a full skim coat across the entire surface, giving a flawless finish suited to gloss paints, critical lighting or feature walls.

Plasterboard stopping compounds typically need 24 hours between coats and another 24 to 48 hours before painting, depending on humidity and temperature. Inspection lighting is used to check every joint and skim coat is properly cured and sanded smooth before the painters take over.

Most drywall repair jobs can be patched rather than fully replaced. Small holes, cracks, water damage and dents are cut back, backed, taped and skim-coated to blend with the surrounding wall. For larger damaged sections, a new piece is cut in and stopped flush.

Ceilings are unforgiving because light skims across them and highlights every bump, ridge or trowel mark. Additional skim coats are applied on ceilings, sanded thoroughly and inspected under raking light before sign-off. It takes longer, but the finish stays uniform once painted.

Skim coating walls is recommended for a premium Level 5 finish, after old wallpaper has been removed or where existing walls have minor surface imperfections. A full skim coat creates one continuous, smooth layer across the wall, suited to modern paint finishes and low-sheen or gloss coatings.
